"Going on a placement was the best thing I ever did"
"The placement is an amazing experience!"
For 7 years, students have been providing us with positive feedback on their placement year experiences.
Here are some of the other comments we have received from students who have undertaken actuarial placements as part of their degree course.
"I'm really glad for all the advice you gave me about how valuable a year out in actuarial work can be and the insight that you gain from this has been exceptional! I can see my actuarial future now in a lot more clarity and this year out has geared me for my final year and beyond this."
"I think the worst part was deciding whether to do the placement or not... If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have thought twice about it!"
"I have found the experience very rewarding and my knowledge of the actuarial profession has grown profoundly over the year. I now have a focus for sitting my final year and know what I am aiming for. I would like to be able to encourage those who are thinking of taking the year out that it is a fantastic idea and it gives you an idea of what the profession is like without the pressure of having to sit actuarial exams."
I would like to say that going on a placement was the best thing I ever did. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and the work... I went back to university focused that actuarial work was exactly what I wanted to, and my results reflected this.
"I was really impressed by your helpful attitude and positive energy.
I was delighted by our conversation, particularly by your insightful advice on interviewing and what areas I could improve in. It made me aware of a number of things I was not too consciously aware of and I will be looking into those matters.
I think an actuarial placement will truly be a great way for me to develop personally and professionally and will allow me to appreciate the true nature of actuarial work."
"Thank you very much for all your guidance and advice along the way - about writing the CV, but most importantly, on interview techniques. I really enjoy how you look at things positively - to turn "nervousness" into "excitement"! It definitely helped during my partner interview, and I've learnt a lot from you.
Here's wishing you all the best with the placement scheme - it's a very good idea and I'll definitely recommend to others!"
"Working at with an actuarial employer was a great experience. Not only did I gain experience within the Actuarial field, living away from home I became a lot more independent."
"It has been a massive learning experience in all manners. I cannot thank Alpha enough!"
"The placement was a fantastic experience in my opinion… My colleagues provided me with a wealth of information and knowledge, which will definitely contribute to my future development and endeavours. The work that was done was very satisfying and fulfilling."
"Overall, the sandwich placement was very valuable to me. It provided me with good hands-on experience of what an actuarial trainee does.
I really enjoyed working for my company, and the people I worked with contributed a lot to this end. They were approachable and always willing to help. The skills I acquired are mainly a result of their sharing of knowledge and my willingness to ask questions (and sound stupid).
This has been my first proper job, and the choice to take a year out to do a placement proved fulfilling in terms of experience."
"The people have been great. I am enjoying the work and Manchester is an amazing city."
"The placement is going well, I'm getting a lot of 'real' work to do rather than the jobs no-one else wants to do which I'm very pleased with. Although I knew next to nothing about GI and reinsurance before I started, I'm picking it up quickly and am fortunate enough to be working with someone who doesn't mind talking me through and explaining various things to me."
"Sorry if this sounds cliched but the placement year is an amazing experience!"
"My placement is going very well. I do really like the work and the life in the company. I am sure I will enjoy the rest of the time of my placement."
"I believe that the experience one attains during the sandwich placements is valuable. Personally, I learnt a lot during my placement.
The working environment helps you develop certain skills that employers require that you will otherwise not get in the classroom. Examples of these are interpersonal skills, communication skills, team-working abilities, proactive skills etc.
You also get the opportunity to brace yourself with knowledge of at least one type of actuarial software that is used in the office. I had the chance to be trained on two pieces of actuarial software: VIP and MoSes.
You are also able to meet a lot of actuarial students and actuaries with whom you can network. This is also advantageous for future employment.
The sandwich placement is something I will recommend to many students."
